How to read a scorecard

Regarding the sample scorecard above, here's what you need to know

  • The top left of the card shows the date, the course (RF, RB, LF, LB)
  • The par for each hole is shown at the top center, along with the HCP holes for seniors (over 70) and regular players
  • The teams are listed along the left hand side, with the players next to the teams.  The space below the player names is used to indicate if the player is a sub, or if the player was absent and using their blind score
  • SR indicates if the player uses the SR HCP or not; HCP shows their 9-hole handicap.
  • Raw (GROSS) scores are entered in the orange squares.  If a score is greyed out, it means it was an M (scored as 4 over par for total score), or was more than 3 over par (the limit for calculating handicaps).  All grey squares will affect the total score for that player for nine holes.
  • The commas (,) next to a raw score indicates how many handicap strokes are given on that hole.  Where there is a comma, the NET score (directly below the GROSS score) will show the score with the strokes taken off.
  • The quotes (') next to net scores show how many points were won by that player on that hole.  Similar for the team score for each hole (the sum of both players' scores)  Likewise, the quotes at the total score indicate how many points were won due to the total score (maximum 2)
  • The red numbers on the right indicate how many points were scored for each player, and for the team score (by adding up all the quotes).  The red numbers on the left indicate the total points for the team, for the day.
  • If you're still confused, buy me a beer after the round and I'll explain it again.

Summary review:

  • All the points scored are shown in red, for players and teams.
  • Points scored for each hole are shown with tick marks after the number ( 3'').
  • Handicap strokes are shown with commas after the number ( 5, )
  • Grey boxes show where the gross score was more than three over par, the limit for scoring
